CEO Perspective

What is a BHAG?

What is a BHAG?For most of us the holidays are over, the New Year has begun, and we all are full of renewed energy and ideas on how to grow our business this year.

One of my tasks over the quiet week between Christmas and New Years Day was cleaning up my office...getting rid of the piles of magazines, old files, etc.  I tend to be a "pile-maker", with most of my piles containing out-dated stuff that is no longer relevant or important.  Into the trash can it went.

But I came across one important document in one of those piles.  My 2011 Goal Sheet.

I had to sit down and review it...all 4 pages full of good intentions and great ideas.  Some of them were accomplished.  Many were not.  I had to ask myself what I did wrong and how I can improve on my performance this year.

The Power of Thanks

To all the readers of this blog, to all my personal and business friends, collegues, partners, collaborators, customers, vendors, and supporters, I want to say THANK YOU!

Thank you for your support for this past year.  Thank you for your encouragement.  Thank you for your feedback on what you want from me and my company.  Thank you for your business, your confidence, your enthusiasm and generally, your friendship.

The world is moving so fast it is hard to keep up.  Web 2.0 (soon 3.0), mobile marketing, social media, video e-mail, virtual reality, GPS-enabled everything, smart phones, apps, WHEW!

At this time of the year, I think it is important to set all that aside and simply be thankful for the many blessings all of us have.

Blessings of family, friends, and opportunities.

I wish all of you the best of Holidays, and a very prosperous 2012.

Sincere and warm regards,

Presentations 101: Less is More

Presentation 101 - AmeriStart - Your USA Sales and Marketing TeamHow many presentations do you make per year?

To customers, prospects, employees, bankers, etc...

If you are like me, it's quite a few, and most of them are too long and too boring.

This is a great article in Forbes magazine about a new way to approach presentations.  Essentially, "Less is More".  The author proposes keeping your presentations
to 5 minutes.

Yes, 5 minutes.

The article is worth reading:

Follow Your Intuition

Steve Jobs - Strategist, Dreamer, Salesman, Promoter, BusinessmanSadly, Steve Jobs is no longer with us.  The entrepreneurial community has lost one of the best.  Steve set a bar for all of us to follow.

He was a strategist, a dreamer, a salesman and promoter, and an intelligent businessman.  I am sure all of you share in my sense of loss.  None of us knew him personally, but we felt as if we did.

He spoke to us through his products, making them simple and intuitive, but not too simple.  That was his genius.

One thing that Steve said during his presentation to the graduating class of Stanford University is the following:

“Trust your intuition, it knows where you want to go.  Follow your instincts.”

Great Comments on Business from Steve Jobs

AmeriStart - Great Comments on Business from Steve Jobs, CEO of AppleSteve Jobs is certainly one of the most influential CEOs in the world.  Few people have had such an impact on the business world as Steve Jobs.

I was re-reading some old information and came across this video of Steve from 1997: http://bit.ly/pMlzhE .  Yes, I know that is quite awhile ago, and that is exactly my point.

The main points he makes were valid then, and they are valid now.  If you don’t have time to view the video now, I have written out the main points below:

Hit By a Bus

AmeriStart - Business Paperwork

It doesn't make for pleasant conversation, but it happens every day...
Business owners die
.

And even as they pass on to the great balance sheet in the sky, their worldly business goes on... for better or worse.

I call this the "hit by a bus" problem, and it's something we will all face:

What will happen to your company if you get hit by a bus?

QR Codes are Taking Over

Are you familiar with QR codes?

If so, you can skip this blog and go about your day.  If you are not sure, read on…

QR codes (short for Quick Response) are becoming very popular in all types of marketing and communications.

On a recent business trip I was surprised to see an entire billboard with nothing but three (3) QR codes on it.
