Rethinking Business Networking

I admit it. I was burned out and ready to quit online networking.  My LinkedIn connections seemed stale, and my Twitter account felt random and useless.  Even my Facebook page was filling up with useless gossip. My time always seems better-spent at a real-world networking event.

Then someone helped me compare the real world to the online sites, and now I have a new perspective.  See if you don't agree with this:

  • http://kozinets.net/__oneclick_uploads/2009/09/social-media-waste-of-time.jpgFacebook is a PUB or BAR --  This is a place to meet informaly and to talk casually.  Expect a lot of discussions around personal issues.  Make friends slowly, and wait to be introduced by your friends as you build a network together.
  • LinkedIn is a TRADE SHOW -- this is a more formal place to meet other professionals and connect for business purposes.  Conversations here are highly professional.  Be concise and courteous, but don't be afraid to introduce yourself.  New relationships are encouraged and welcomed, so long as decorum is followed.
  • Twitter is a COCKTAIL PARTY -- There are so many conversations going on at once, and you may join any of those that interest you.  People are polite and if you say hello (by "Following" them) they are likely to greet you in return (by "Following" you) and a conversation can begin.  Use the search tool to find others in the crowd who are talking about things of interest to you.
  • YouTube is TIMES SQUARE ON NEW YEARS EVE -- Its a big place, and hard to break through all the noise.  But if you can craft a message that breaks through the clutter, lots of people will see you.
  • MySpace is WOODSTOCK -- Like the rock concert of the 60's, MySpace is a wild & crazy place just perfect for younger people to hang out and meet.  Adults tread lightly!
