HOW BIG IS THE USA MARKET? VERY BIG
Everyone knows the USA is a big market. I have blogged many times about just how big it is.
Not everyone knows, for example, that California is the world's 7th largest economy. Just one state out of 50, is a HUGE market.
Today I received an e-mail from the Charlotte, North Carolina Chamber of Commerce telling me that my area, the southern states, is now ranked as the 2nd largest economy in the world. See the chart below.
South rises to World’s Second Largest Economy
The 17 U.S. states that comprise The American South have amassed $5.13 trillion in total gross product during 2009, representing 40% of total U.S. GDP. The American South overtook Japan in total gross product making the region the second-largest economy in the world.

Incredible. Just 17 states out of 50. Just the SOUTHERN states, are a $5.13 Trillion in GDP.
So, what does this mean? It is just one more indication that you can be very successful in marketing to a smaller area of the USA. You do not have to have customers from coast to coast, and border to border. You can target specific areas, or specific niches, and still have a total market that is bigger than most countries.
Good food for thought.
