Did Adobe Just Give a Boost for Flash Marketers in the US?
Rumors are swirling about the recent joint announcement between Google, Yahoo and Adobe regarding the use of the Flash player and how search engines can index it.
This American marketer is cautiously optimistic about the possibility. I admit, I'm more optimistic than cautious at this point. if the announcement lives up to its promise, I will personally change the dynamics of our internal as well as our customer's marketing efforts in the US and over the globe.
You should be too as you try to promote in America. This could be really BIG for you!
Here's why...
THE STATE OF THE FLASH UNION
About 98% of Internet Web browsers automatically have the Adobe Flash player built right in. this means that they can see all of the cool looking animated graphics, videos and images that can give real depth and what American marketers call "punch" to your presentations and promotions.
But do you know who can't see those awesome flash files very well? Search Engines. that's right.... Google, Yahoo, MSN and every other one out there. It's very ironic in many ways considering one of Google's hottest properties, YouTube delivers all of its videos by flash.
THE IMPACT ON YOU AND ME
If the search engines have trouble seeing the content in your flash presentations, your content is harder to find, fewer American's get good matches to you and therefore, you MAY MISS OPPORTUNITIES TO SELL TO THEM.
I have been in Web design and marketing in one form or another over the past 12 years and this situation has been a constant challenge since flash became popular among designers in the late 90's.
So we're stuck using boring HTML pages with simple images, right? Or at best, maybe we're stuck using small piece's of Flash as we try to build powerful presentations that communicate ideas and differentiate us in the competitive American marketplace. Is this the reality we must live by forever?
Not any more....
SO WHAT'S THE LATEST
Here is how I summarize the latest situation.
Google, Yahoo, MSN and the other search engines have not been doing the best job they can because they can't effectively "index" (index means they can't read the content of) flash movies and flash sites. Because of this, they are failing their customers and are potentially losing revenue.
On the other side, Adobe is losing revenue opportunities with designers and developers on multiple of their product lines because they know that while flash is widely used, it could be the standard platform for designing great Web sites, Landing pages and other presentations if only search engines could better rank the flash content.
In June of 2008, Adobe announced they had developed a technical piece of software for both Google and Yahoo (I'm not clear where MSN stands) that can theoretically allow the search giants to properly rank the content within flash files.
Here's the real interesting point. Apparently, it will work with existing flash files, not just new ones.
Let's hope this works the way they claim....
BRINGING THIS BACK TO DOING MORE BUSINESS IN AMERICA
Global marketers wanting to do more business in America, listen up! If you want to get more American opportunities and sales, then you need to start to look at flash to help visually communicate your benefits to them. American's don't want to read, they want to be shown. they want to be presented too. they want to make visual connections with the information.
If you can now use flash to build powerful presentations and offers and know that the search engines are going to actually HELP you drive visitations and not hurt your efforts, Flash may well be one of your most compelling tools to help you sell more products and services in the US.
It's important that you think about how your business can utilize the flash medium and get more revenue from your American market.
